Guest post written by Jessie Sutton Whenever I go and travel someplace new, I like to find some things that the locals like. Well, I do a lot of planning that way I can achieve that. Right now I’m working on finding out a lot of really good local places to go to in New York City, where I’m going in two months on a mini vacation. I’ve been looking through all types of websites and guides online to fine where you can find all of these famous beauty locations. While I was looking through some of those, I ran across the sit HearingAidsbyMiracleear.com. After I looked through it a little bit, I decided to sign up to get some hearing aids. I tried to come up with some really good iconic places. And after I thought about it, I decided that I would need to find some locations for Ghostbusters. I’m planning on seeing the firehouse and then also some of the apartment buildings that they supposedly live in. I love seeing things in real life that I’ve seen in movies! |
Finding some movie locations like a real New Yorker
The Retro Run Brings Glam Out
This past weekend, one of my all-time favorite races that occurs in our local area was the Retro Run! The reason why the run is so much fun is because people get to dress up in throwback clothes and run a short 3-miler all decked out in their 70s or 80s garb. It is quite the treat to see people running in afro wigs, dashikis and all sorts of wonderfully, mysterious things that people can think of to wear.
I like the race because people get to use their imaginations to put together those memorable and jaw-dropping outfits. Like the man running in the skirt. Or the his-’n-her duo decked out in the hospital uniform as doctor and nurse…only the “hers” was wearing “his” and the “his” was wearing “hers.” And right behind them was what appeared to be a granny in her http://www.blueskyscrubs.com/categories/Scrubs/, but it turned out that it was the couple’s patient, and it was their dog! Quite. A. Sight.
I know to those folks who are NOT runners, this may seem like a big to-do about nothing, but since running is a popular sport, things like the Retro Run are fun because it gets the community involved, gets local businesses involved and encourages people to get out and participate in a sport that they would otherwise think was boring and ho-hum. And, if you like to run AND dress up, this type of run/race is ideal to get a chance to do both of them at once.
This year I was kind of plain and boring in my garb since it was my first time participating, but next year I want to go ALL OUT and do something different and fun with my outfit. The couple in the medical scrub uniforms gave me a lot of ideas, and I’m also thinking about the afro deal. There’s a lot I could do with that, and the FIRST thing that comes to mind is a sexy, throwback Foxy Brown rocking an afro in a nurse’s uniform. What do you think? I think I could most definitely pull it off!
My New Mac Lipstick: Pink Nouveau
You know, Mac cosmetics has a recyclable program that’s really neat; you return 6 empty cosmetic containers for your choice of a free lipstick. I’ve been participating in this program for a number of years, and it never fails that when I go in to get my “free” lipstick, I always, ALWAYS end up getting far more than th free one. I guess that’s their point, no? At any rate, today I was quite pleased on the new lipstick that I selected at the Mac counter.
Now, since I am Black, I have always thought that there are/were certain colors that didn’t look right on my skin. Since my skin color is a medium brown tone, I’ve tended to lean heavily toward the safe colors, the browns and burgundies, you know, the colors that won’t be so loud and dis-alarming. Before you get into any of your love-the-skin-color-God-gave-you-rant, let me be clear. I’m not saying that all Black women feel this way or have this issue, but I am just saying that I have always thought that. At the Mac counter, they do have A LOT of colors that complement and accentuate all skin tones in a flattering way, but today I wanted to try something different, something bold. So, here it goes. Introducing….
I’ve started this new HCG diet and what’s the main thing that I’m looking forward to? Wearing my own clothes that I haven’t been able to get into for years. That would include my super-sexy size 6 Lucky Brand jeans, my cute little short-sleeved t-shirts and a few little dresses that I haven’t been able to wear for years. I’m so excited about being able to possibly finally get back into my old clothes, and soon. Gonna wear my lace cami bra with my favorite jeans and stiletto heels the FIRST day I reach my goal weight! I was motivated to start this new diet primarily because I LOVE to wear cute clothes, and I have lots of cute clothes in my closet that I can’t get into anymore. Do I detest being a big, juicy girl? Absolutely not, but I just love clothes more than I dislike not being able to wear them. There are a few things of course that I will hold on to, one of them being my tummy control swim suit. This swim suit has been my undying, close friend for many years, and many pool and beach visits. Yep, I think it’s a friend I’ll hang on to. My other glam-friend-piece-of-clothing that I think I’ll hold on to is my after-five occasion dress, a.k.a. my plus size sequin dress that fits me oh so much like a leather glove! The sequins are stunning and hit the light just right, plus I’ve gotten loads of compliments from wearing it when I’ve accompanied my husband to many formal occasions. Now all I’ve got left to do is plan out my diet menu and exercise plan to last me for the next 30 days. And seeing as that I like to style and glam out, I plan on doing it all the right way, all the way down to my lunch bag purse, my designer water bottles and a few tasty mints to help curb my appetite. After all, glam is glitz, right??Dieting In Glam Style
Rocking Your Look
Most often, the most basic items in your closet can exhibit the biggest glam that you can imagine! If you have purses, shoes or accessories that look good on their own, trying pairing them up with the right shoes and bag, and you’ll most likely have a huge hit!
For instance, this bag that I bought at a store in the mall about two Christmases ago is still giving me lots of style and glam to just about any
outfit that I put together. One look I rocked was was pairing it up with a pair of white slacks, a burgundy-colored blouse and a pair of white shades and accessories to complete the look.
The bag made a very nice complement to the outfit, not to mention the compliments that I got from the look. Now all I need to do is find out the name of the store in the mall where I got the purse. I’m inclined to go back and get it in another color just so I can see how many other looks I can put together.
Hidden Treasures: At The Thrift Store
Now before you get all uuccky! and stuff, just listen to me. There are a lot of cool deals happening at Thrift Stores and Goodwill shops. The key is to LOOK around and make sure you’re looking for quality made stuff. Yes, there’s likely more junk in there than not, but you’re looking for that pearl, that gem and that rare find.
Also, don’t go in there expecting to find stuff in “ready to go” status. Expect to do a little polishing on it, no matter what it is, because remember, it IS used, right? So whether that’s a pair of jeans that’s going to need to see a drycleaners or that wood table that’s going to need a little polishing to look great, expect to work a little for that deal of a bargain you’re about to take home.
So take your time, look around, be thorough AND discriminating, but make sure it’s something you want. You will be surprised at what you’ll find. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!
The New Kicks
Looking good is important when working out too, right? Of course it is! That’s why over at my fitness and exercise blog, I try to focus on more than just the mechanics of exercising but on the importance of looking good while you’re doing it! After all, I have never felt as good as I do when I’m sporting the cute little fly, matching outfit when I’m running or lifting and I certainly want to look good when I’m in a low-key class like Yoga or Pilates.
Last week, I ordered two new pairs of running shoes from Road Runner Sports and I am quite pleased with my purchase! I got a pair of the Asics and the New Balance shoes since my running buddies have suggested that I use two pair to train and run in to lessen the wear on them. One color is a blue….and the other color is a blue. What outfit should I wear with them??
I’m going to start looking around now for the bling outfit that I can pair up with my new kicks. I’ll post pics soon and show you all how it really goes together!
